The Easton Republican Town Committee is shocked, saddened, and dismayed at hearing State Representative Anne Hughes, who represents part of our town as well as Weston and Redding, advocate after a Tax Day press conference that her constituents’ finances are of such insignificance to them that she is in favor of further taxing them under the guise they will be ignorant to it.
In case you weren’t paying attention, as Rep. Hughes hopes, she was caught on a hot mic after a press conference on Tuesday saying ‘I always tell the governor, tax my people – they won’t even notice’ to a handful of fellow Democratic representatives.

“Hearing Ms. Hughes’ comments said out loud, even if she thinks it was in jest, is a disturbing realization and reminder that she cares not about those she represents, but only about a Democratic agenda that has never met someone else’s money they couldn’t spend,” Easton RTC Chair Darrell Harris said. “It’s quite rich, pun intended, for someone who claims to be a proponent of affordable housing and combatting rising costs to even be joking about taking more money out of her constituents’ pockets in an economic climate where budgets are already strained.”
The remarks came following a presser held on April 15 – fittingly, in a state with one of the highest tax burdens in the nation – where Democratic lawmakers from the Tax Equity Caucus pushed for a capital gains tax increase, among other items.
“Just days ago, Rep. Hughes posted on her Facebook page that ‘I am fighting to support the ability to afford to live in our state,’ which is absolutely contradictory to this recent statement,” Easton RTC Campaign Committee Chair Lou DiPietro said. “As someone who represents a farm town that was built on the backs of hard-working, blue-collar folks, this is sad enough – but her fraudulence being exposed is even sadder given she is a member of our town’s Commission for the Aging, which actively works with our seniors to provide relief from the increasing financial burdens they face as they try to stay in their homes comfortably.”
Elections have consequences. Unfortunately, for the residents of the 135th State House district, those consequences would be more taxes if their state representative’s ideals became reality.
